Thanks to the new range of engines, the new GLS provides a new, more nimble driving experience. Numerous innovations make them more agile from the outset and offer improved pulling power even on country roads. At the same time, the engines are already designed to meet future emissions standards and deliver the brand's hallmark high level of noise and vibration comfort.

In reference to partial load range, the top-of-the-range GLS 580 4MATIC is now also noticeably more agile. The V8 powertrain responds more quickly to accelerator inputs, operates more efficiently and delivers its performance more smoothly than before. Output has increased from 510 hp to 530 hp, and 553 lb-ft (previously 538 lb-ft) of torque is available across a wide range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. 

In preparation for future emission standards, the V8 now features a flat-plane crankshaft instead of the previous cross-plane configuration. The ignition sequence alternates between both cylinder banks. Optimizations compared with the previous engine include the injection system, exhaust gas aftertreatment with particulate filter, cylinder head intake and exhaust ports, and the intake camshaft. Mercedes-Benz has also redesigned the impeller and housing of the exhaust gas turbocharger while two Lanchester balance shafts ensure exceptionally smooth running.

In the GLS 450 4MATIC, the six-cylinder engine is now even more responsive and offers an even more refined driving experience. This is due to the increase in torque to 413 lb-ft, especially under partial load. These improvements stem from a new, more powerful electric auxiliary compressor, a cylinder head with optimized intake and exhaust ports, and a modified intake camshaft. Further refinements to the combustion process and exhaust aftertreatment round out the upgrades. 

Both engines feature an integrated starter generator, which provides intelligent support at lower engine speeds. When combined with turbocharging, this ensures outstanding power delivery. The system includes a 48-volt electrical system, which enables functions such as coasting, boost, and recuperation, resulting in significant fuel savings. In addition, the engines start very quickly and comfortably with the help of the ISG. As a result, operation of the start-stop function is nearly imperceptible to the driver, as is the transition from coasting with the engine off to powerful acceleration with engine power. At idle, the intelligent interaction between the ISG and the gas engine ensures outstanding smoothness.

2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS model range:

The NVH characteristics have been optimized through additional insulation measures versus the previous models. The transmission tunnel and engine bulkhead are now lined with a particularly highquality non-woven material. The engine cover is fitted with a special heavy mat that effectively absorbs high-frequency combustion noises. Plus, acoustic foam is used in select bodyshell cavities to reduce engine, road and wind noise.

4MATIC all-wheel drive: superior when off-road, agile on the road

All-wheel drive has been a tradition at Mercedes-Benz for over 120 years. In 1985, the name 4MATIC was introduced, and since then, the system has been continually refined to meet the highest standards of driving stability, safety, and dynamics. The advantages of 4MATIC are not only evident off-road: its enhanced traction capabilities make every journey smoother and safer. On the road, 4MATIC offers increased driving pleasure and additional safety reserves, while effortlessly towing heavy loads.

All GLS models are equipped with the 4MATIC fully variable all-wheel drive system (Torque on Demand). The system continuously adjusts the distribution of power between the front and rear axles, from 0 to 100 percent, according to the driving conditions. The torque is adjusted as needed by the electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, taking both the driver's preferences and the current road conditions into account. This ensures that 4MATIC delivers sporty and safe handling, even on varying road surfaces and changing grip levels.

Exceptional ride comfort and maximum agility 

With five multi-core processors and more than 20 sensors, optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL for the GLS 580 4MATIC responds predictively to any driving situation and ensures a unique driving experience. The control units analyze the driving situation 1000 times per second and adapt the suspension accordingly. E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL enables a very wide range of handling characteristics. With the help of the driving programs, customers can choose between the comfort of a luxury sedan and the agility of a sporty SUV. Since this active suspension can individually control the spring and damper forces on each wheel, it counteracts not only roll but also pitch and lift movements. The body no longer dips when braking and accelerating.

The system is based on the fully load bearing, AIRMATIC air suspension system and, therefore, offers all-round control that keeps the vehicle level constant, regardless of the load. At the same time, it allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered as required to increase or decrease ground clearance. Various levels can also be selected in special off-road driving programs.

The following functions are also helpful in everyday use and off-road driving:

• Free-wheel mode: If, for example, the GLS gets stuck in the sand, this mode, which is only available in the Off-Road driving program, can offer help to free the vehicle more easily. Where possible, the level is automatically raised and lowered several times, which alternately increases or reduces the pressure of the wheels on the ground and thus improves traction. In effect, the GLS is rocking itself free.
• Individual wheel control: After selecting the Off-Road driving program, the spring level can be adjusted individually for each wheel via MBUX. This improves the vehicle's alignment on rough terrain.
• Rear lowering during loading/unloading: The rear of the vehicle can be lowered by over two inches at the touch of a button for easier access. This makes it easier to load and unload the trunk. 

Standard AIRMATIC air suspension delivers a modern, well‑balanced driving experience, and features firmer, sportier tuning than before, yet still offers a high level of ride comfort.

Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL for the GLS 580 4MATIC operates at 48 volts and can even recuperate energy on rough road surfaces, making the system particularly efficient. The 48-volt motorpump units on all four wheels are coordinated by a central control unit.

Support in almost every driving situation

The new GLS is equipped with a new, water-cooled supercomputer. It has extensive power reserves for future driving assistance functions¹³. To provide optimum driving assistance, each model is equipped with a variety of sensors: ten exterior cameras, up to five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These sensors work together with a powerful control unit running MB.OS. Artificial intelligence processes the sensor data to assess the traffic situation in the surrounding area. 

Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE ASSIST with functions such as Digital Extra: Distance Assist DISTRONIC are among the extensive standard driver assistance features. Optional MB.DRIVE ASSIST PLUS enables extended hands-free driving on highways up to 130 km/h and automatic braking for stop signs and traffic lights.

Fitted standard, Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST detects parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle and, for the first time, also enables diagonal parking⁸. It also detects free spaces that are not marked by white lines. In addition, MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST can now assist the driver when leaving a parking space – even if the vehicle was previously parked manually. Furthermore, if the function is activated, the system automatically carries out the parking maneuver at speeds of up to 5 km/h. This makes it around 60 percent faster than the previous system.

The Digital Extra: Reverse maneuvering function⁹ enables the vehicle to automatically retrace part of the route most recently driven forwards, with system support available under certain conditions. While this assistant is active, the image from the reversing camera and a graphic representation of the planned route are displayed on the main screen. This is particularly useful in traffic situations where turning is not possible.

Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360, included standard, offers new and improved surround views with its 360-degree camera and a redesigned human-machine interface.

For 20 years, Mercedes-Benz has enriched the automotive world with an exceptional full-size SUV. Initially introduced as the GL, this generously proportioned seven-seater has since set benchmarks for space, comfort, technology and poise. An SUV that creates experiences and stands as a symbol of elegance, strength and Mercedes-Benz's distinctive "welcome home" feeling. As part of a facelift, the second generation received even more luxury, personality and expressive power in 2015. And with the new name, an unmistakable statement was made: in terms of its model designation, the GLS became the S-Class among SUVs. With the new GLS, Mercedes-Benz has now renewed and further strengthened this claim to prestige in countless details.

The new standing Mercedes-Benz star on the hood stands as a proud and unmistakable symbol of automotive excellence. It also acts as a graceful homage to the S‑Class, where this iconic detail has long embodied tradition, prestige, and understated confidence. An optional illuminated standing MercedesBenz star is even available to add a touch of subtle theatre to every journey. Framed by an illuminated chrome surround, three horizontal chrome fins, one vertical fin and the shimmering Mercedes‑Benz star pattern, the larger grille radiates a strong sense of presence and modern luxury. For customers who prefer a central star, the AMG Line package offers an equally distinctive expression.

The redesigned front bumper lends the GLS an even more confident and expressive presence. A sleek black panel visually unites the headlamps and radiator grille, creating a well-balanced, contemporary appearance. The headlamps and taillights, with signature Mercedes-Benz star design, ensure the GLS is unmistakable day and night, while subtly emphasizing the model's refined character. At the rear, a design trim with an integrated Mercedes star links the tail lamps into one flowing element, highlighting the vehicle's impressive width.

Two new paint finishes – Dark Petrol and MANUFAKTUR Patagonia Red metallic – enrich the color palette, while two new available high‑gloss, 21‑inch alloy wheel designs – an aerodynamically optimized cross‑spoke wheel and a bold disc wheel design with a black center – expand the possibilities for personal expression. The new optional 22-inch AMG multi-spoke wheel design in two color variants complements the range.

Like the new S-Class, the GLS exemplifies the extensive customization options of the MANUFAKTUR program as the SUV flagship of Mercedes-Benz. It offers a wide range of exclusive colors, leather upholsteries and trim elements, allowing the vehicle to be configured almost entirely to personal preferences.

Every GLS is fitted standard with a large panoramic roof. With over 10.8 sq ft of glass, it ranks among the largest of its kind in a production SUV, featuring glass panels that span the full width and length of the roof. One section can be raised electrically and slides far over the fixed rear glass panel.

Brighter and more efficient: DIGITAL LIGHT with micro-LED technology

The new GLS comes standard with the new DIGITAL LIGHT generation with micro-LED technology (pixelated LED) and a powerful chip. The high-resolution lighting field is thus increased by around 40 percent, enabling increased brightness for the high beam and for road projections. At the same time, the light module consumes up to 50 percent less energy than its predecessor. The headlamps themselves also contribute to the careful use of resources. These offer the same customer experience but weigh than 25 percent less than the previous generation headlamps. This is due to the more compact design of the micro-LED and only one control unit. All software components are integrated into the MercedesBenz Operating System (MB.OS) and were predominantly developed by Mercedes-Benz.

The new partial high‑beam function improves the detection of poorly lit road users without dazzling others. Using combined camera data and map information, the cornering light now responds even more precisely to the road ahead. Further refinements make the partial high‑beam function even more robust.

New interior color and trim elements, beloved steering wheel controls

New trim elements and additional comfort features significantly enhance the interior of the GLS. The air vents are now round instead of rectangular and provide visual anchors either side of the imposing MBUX Superscreen. Atmospheric ambient styles are available as background motifs in a separate app, enhancing the unique effect of the MBUX Superscreen. The UI designers at Mercedes-Benz created these high-resolution welcome animations with great attention to detail. The striking background images offer a wide choice from calm to intense, from cold to warm and from technical to emotional. This allows users to create a personal atmosphere in the vehicle. The color scheme of the instrument cluster, including the dials and ambient lighting, is coordinated with these emotional motifs.

Standard comfort seats with new 3D seat graphics and moccasin stitching combine modern aesthetics with a comfortable seating experience. Electric adjustment of the seat cushion depth is also standard.

The warm "Beech Brown" color, combined with black, is new to the portfolio. It expands the selection of classic interior colors such as Black, Macchiato Beige, and Bahía Brown. The new color combination is available in MB-Tex and leather. Three new trim elements expand the possibilities for configuring the Mercedes-Benz GLS to suit individual preferences, including trim elements in Open-pore Dark Brown Birch Wood and Open-pore Brown Walnut Wood. As a counterpoint, Mercedes-Benz also offers trim elements with the new light-colored aluminum flowing lines.

If the seat occupancy detection identifies that no front passenger is present, the passenger screen displays the Mercedes-Benz pattern (stars) or a decorative image. Customers can also generate a personalized decorative image via the Mercedes-Benz app.

When it comes to the steering wheel, Mercedes-Benz has adopted the much‑loved "rocker‑and‑roller" control concept. The galvanized‑metal roller design enhances the tactile, analogue user experience.

MB.OS, the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, transforms the GLS into an intelligent companion that thinks, learns, and evolves with its driver. MB.OS integrates and controls every aspect of the vehicle. This supercomputer uses AI and powerful chips and is connected to the Mercedes Benz Intelligent Cloud. This allows for over-the-air updates enabling the GLS to remain up to date for years to come.

This means that the vehicle can be conveniently customized even after purchase, offering a level of flexibility that truly sets it apart. The ever-expanding Digital Extras portfolio is available with attractive offers in the Mercedes-Benz Store and the Mercedes-Benz App. From innovative navigation features to remote functions, GUARD 360°, on-demand functions, entertainment, productivity tools and driver assistance systems, the portfolio continues to grow in order to meet customer needs. Together, the attractive entertainment package featuring functions such as audio and video streaming, gaming, and productivity apps, unlocks a truly next-level driving experience for customers.

The new MBUX generation integrates artificial intelligence (AI) from Microsoft, among others. As a result, customers experience an even more intelligent and personalized digital companion. The MBUX Virtual Assistant¹⁰ taps into the collective knowledge of the internet, enabling it to engage in complex, multi‑part conversations.

MBUX Superscreen and passenger display as standard

The standard MBUX Superscreen brings the digital world into the GLS. Three 12.3-inch displays are located under a large glass surface. The MBUX Zero Layer displays the most important information and recommendations in the configurable footer bar. Users can also arrange their apps however they would like, with the ability to group them in self-named folders, making access a highly personal experience. More than 30 apps are currently available, covering audio, video, gaming and a range of other services.

For anyone who appreciates a spatial display, the 3D driver display is available as an option. At the touch of a button, it switches into 3D mode. Advanced technology delivering genuine customer benefits extends beyond the driver's seat: For front passengers, their standard display enables them to view dynamic content while the vehicle is in motion. TV or video streaming is available from Disney+, YouTube und RIDEVU (in selected markets) and more local providers. A camera-based system monitors whether the driver is still looking ahead at the road. If there is a risk of distraction, the image on the passenger display is automatically dimmed. Front passengers can operate the content via the touchscreen.  

Full HD screens for the rear: MBUX high-end rear seat entertainment

The new MBUX high‑end rear seat entertainment system turns the rear of the GLS into a space that adapts effortlessly to every need – from relaxed entertainment to focused productivity. No matter which seat configuration is chosen, passengers can enjoy audio and video streaming on two brilliant 11.6‑, full HD displays, while integrated full HD cameras open the door to seamless in‑car office functions. Content can be accessed intuitively via the touchscreens or with the optional, individually configurable and removable MBUX remote controls. These remotes also give passengers direct access to comfort features such as air-conditioning, window blinds, and the settings for the Rear Comfort Package Plus. Sound can be enjoyed through the vehicle's speakers or via Bluetooth or wired headphones, creating a personal audio experience for every passenger.

MBUX Virtual Assistant with a choice of appearances

As a "living" avatar, the MBUX Virtual Assistant is always present on the central display. In the standard setting, it is blue, or silver in AMG Line models. The virtual assistant also uses various animations to signal whether it is currently speaking, listening or processing information. Movement, brightness, intensity, and color interact seamlessly to communicate intuitively with the driver.

In addition to the star avatar, there are two other representations of intelligence: a human-like avatar emerges from a densifying cloud of stars. It embodies intelligence in a technological, futuristic way. With its expressive face, the third avatar creates an even stronger personal connection, inviting playful interaction.

Navigation with familiar user interface, available Digital Extra: MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation

In the new GLS, the navigation experience is based on Google Maps. The unique guidance system offers Mercedes-Benz customers the best of both worlds: Google Maps technology and the highly regarded user interface and proven services of Mercedes-Benz.

MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation overlays graphic navigation and traffic information onto live images, which is particularly helpful in complex turning situations (e.g. in cities or on confusing highway exits).  Three‑dimensional animated arrows guide the driver to the correct exit, while a forward‑facing camera captures the area ahead of the vehicle. Virtual objects and information are then overlaid onto this live video feed on the central display.

Intuitive visual support is also provided by the MBUX Augmented Navigation Head Up Display. Available in the GLS for the first time, the system projects key navigation information such as arrows, lane guidance and points of interest seemingly directly onto the road ahead.

A particularly convenient feature is the ability to lock, unlock, and start the GLS using the Digital Extra: Digital Vehicle Key - all the driver needs to do is carry their mobile phone with them. In the latest generation of this access system, the vehicle automatically locks or unlocks when the user with the vehicle key approaches or moves away. This feature can also be deactivated via the head unit if desired. The digital vehicle key works with most iPhones and Android phones¹⁴.    

A digital customer experience: video conferencing

Whether on the way to an important appointment or between meetings, the GLS transforms into a mobile office, ensuring efficiency without compromise. A variety of video conferencing apps are available via the in-car app store, including a new version of the "Meetings for Teams" app, which takes productivity in the car to a whole new level. It allows drivers to use the car's camera while driving, so that other participants can see them during a meeting. As Mercedes-Benz places a strong emphasis on safety, the use of the camera complies with the laws of the respective country and has been approved for use while driving. To minimize distraction and maximize safety while driving, the meeting video automatically switches off as soon as the camera is activated. This means that drivers cannot see shared screens or slides – and the camera can be switched off at any time.

First-class: Where every seat is the best seat

The interior and comfort features

The GLS is the largest and most luxurious SUV from Mercedes-Benz, offering more of everything: more space, more comfort and more luxury. Its commanding presence stems from its majestic proportions: 205 inches in length and 77 inches in width, radiating pure strength and elegance. Its generous dimensions create an interior that feels open and inviting, with space for up to seven passengers to travel in first-class comfort. The long wheelbase of 123.4 inches – 2.4 inches more than the GLE – provides an exceptional sense of spaciousness, particularly for the second row. All three seat rows are fully electrically adjustable, and even the third row provides two full‑size seats that comfortably accommodate people up to 6'4" tall.

Access to the third row is made wonderfully simple thanks to the electric Easy Entry function. And when more room for luggage or equipment is needed, the third‑row seats lower seamlessly into the floor at the touch of a button. The second-row folds flat – unlocking up to 2,400 L of versatile load space. Passengers in the third row enjoy thoughtful details such as seat heating and their own USB charging ports. With the optional five‑zone air-conditioning, they even benefit from a dedicated climate zone with roof‑mounted air vents, ensuring personalized comfort for everyone on board.

First-class travel in the second and third rows, too

With the Rear Comfort Package Plus, the GLS transforms the rear cabin into both a comprehensively equipped mobile office and a serene place of relaxation. Multi‑contour seats with the Pro massage function, removable MBUX remote controls, THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, and electric sun blinds in both doors create an environment that adapts effortlessly to every need. Additional comforts such as seat heating for the third row, rear side airbags, comfort head restraints, wireless charging for mobile devices, and adaptive lighting further enhance the sense of wellbeing.

The multi‑contour seats ensure that passengers in the rear enjoy the same level of comfort as those in the front. Generous adjustment options allow for a perfectly tailored seating position with secure lateral support. Gradually adjustable seat temperatures and soothing massage programs turn every journey into a moment of pure pleasure.

The new removable MBUX remote controls replace the previous tablets and position all vehicle and entertainment functions directly in the hands of rear passengers. The Rear Comfort Package Plus also adds refined details such as leather grab handles, an extended comfort center armrest with an illuminated storage compartment, and a center console with two cupholders. For even greater freedom, the rear passenger on the front‑passenger side can electrically move the front seat forward at the touch of a button – creating noticeably more legroom and an exceptionally relaxed, spacious seating experience.

New massage functions and improved seat climate control

A new vibration function in the front seats deepens the invigorating or relaxing massage programs, creating a sensation that feels almost like a personal spa treatment on the move. Four precisely placed vibration motors in the seat cushion deliver an exceptional deep‑tissue effect that melts away tension. And for those who choose the Rear Comfort Package Plus, this soothing experience extends to the second seat row as well – ensuring that every passenger can unwind in their own way.

With its wide selection of ENERGIZING COMFORT programs, the GLS offers a holistic wellness experience tailored to each moment. Passengers can choose from five distinct programs – Energy, Good Vibes, Relax, Fresh Breeze, and Warm & Cozy – each designed to enhance wellbeing, uplift the mood or create a calming atmosphere.

The optional seat climate control adds another layer of comfort by gently ventilating the front seats. It refreshes, regulates moisture, and maintains a pleasant seating climate even on longer journeys. To increase airflow and improve efficiency, the system now uses radial instead of axial fans in the cushions and backrests – delivering a noticeably more refined and consistent cooling experience.

Clean air with the new electric cabin air filter

Whether stuck in heavy city traffic or driving through a tunnel, the new GLS continuously works to purify the air you breathe – completely renewing the interior air approximately every 90 seconds for all occupants. At the heart of the system is an advanced, multi-stage filtration concept with an electric filter, ensuring exceptionally clean air and further reducing unpleasant odors. The incoming outside air is effectively cleaned of harmful and unpleasant components using this multi-stage concept. In the first stage, the outside air passes through a pre-filter that traps larger particles from the airflow. Next, an electric filter ionizes fine dust particles, enabling excellent filtration at the interior filter. While the prefilter only cleans the outside air in the first filtration stage, the interior filter is also active in recirculation mode.

ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL intelligently monitors air quality inside and outside the vehicle using fine dust and air quality sensors. Through the intelligent networking of sensor data, the system detects nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and fine dust particles of size PM2.5 in the outside air. PM2.5 particles have a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. They are so small that they can only be seen under an electron microscope. When the air quality and fine dust sensor readings reach a certain level, the climate control system automatically switches between fresh air and recirculation mode.

Noticeably more driving comfort, especially in the rear

The new cloud-based damper regulation with AIRMATIC delivers a gliding ride, with intelligent damping control providing noticeably greater comfort over longer speed bumps. This new smooth, luxurious experience is the result of cutting-edge suspension technology and the unique community of MercedesBenz drivers who support each other. Once the intelligent damper control function is activated, the damping is electronically adjusted shortly before the respective speed bumps to ensure greater comfort. This increase in comfort is particularly noticeable for rear seat occupants. Mercedes-Benz developed the function itself and has applied for a patent.

The basis for the damping adjustment is "Car-to-X" information¹⁷. This safety system enables a Mercedes-Benz vehicle travelling ahead to transmit hazard data anonymously to the Mercedes-Benz Cloud in real time via the mobile network. "Car-to-X" refers to communication between vehicles. Because the sensors of other cars are also used, the technology significantly extends the coverage area of the vehicle's own sensors, such as radar or camera systems. "Car-to-X" technology thus enables the car to "see" around corners, so to speak.
