The new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+

The super-sportscar in the compact class

Outstanding performance, ultimate driving dynamics, and expressive design – the new Mercedes-AMG compact sportscar, the CLA 45 4MATIC+ has it all. With a newly developed 2.0-litre engine, the CLA 45 4MATIC+ is even more powerful than its predecessor, with up to 382 hp on demand. The new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-8G dual-clutch transmission guarantees perfect sequences in all driving situations, and considerably faster gearshifts. For top traction, active fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive distributes torque at the rear axle on a wheel-selective basis using AMG TORQUE CONTROL. This is made possible by a new rear axle differential that features two multidisc clutches – one for each wheel.

"We have completely redesigned our CLA 45 – from the engine and transmission through to the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain and body structure, and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class." said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Exterior design: AMG family membership even more apparent

The new CLA 45 4MATIC+ appears even more distinctive than its predecessor. The exterior conveys sheer driving pleasure even at standstill. For the first time, this compact class now features the AMG-specific radiator grille with a wider lower contour and twelve vertical louvres – a clear indicator of AMG Performance family membership. At the same time, the pronounced "shark nose" along with the slim, deeply contoured headlamps and aerodynamically favourable hood visually lower the front section to create the impression of an extremely dynamic forward thrust.

The wider front fenders with flared wheel arches further accentuate this imposing presence. These create space for the wider front axle, and underline the athletic appearance of the vehicle.

Individual details as distinguishing features

The CLA 45 4MATIC+ has an even more expressive appearance with its jet-like external air inlets, showing its close family relationship with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The front splitter seamlessly transitions into the side air curtains ahead of the front wheels, which help to optimize the airflow and improve aero-performance and the Cd figure.

Viewed from the side, the wider AMG side skirts visually lowers the CLA 45, so that it appears to hug the road more closely. With the standard Silver Chrome package, the inserts are featured in silver chrome, and with the AMG Night Package, they become high-gloss black.

As standard, the CLA 45 4MATIC+ features 18-inch light alloy wheels in a 10-spoke design, aerodynamically optimized and painted in tantalum grey with size 245/40 R 18 tires. The AMG high-performance braking system features grey painted brake callipers with white AMG lettering.

Round twin exhaust tailpipes for the performance compact car

The rear view of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ features two round twin tailpipes (82 mm diameter) and a wide rear apron. Slim two-piece rear-light clusters further emphasize the impression of width at the rear. A diffuser with four vertical twin fins contributes to better aero-performance – it is extended forward at the centre of the vehicle, making it work more effectively. The spoiler lip in the vehicle colour featured on the trunk lid rounds off the look.

Optional exterior features include:

  • AMG Aerodynamic package for optimized aerodynamic balance includes a modified front splitter and additional flics on the front apron, an additional diffuser blade, side spoiler lips on the rear apron, and a larger spoiler lip in high gloss black. These features increase the downforce, and handling stability at the physical limits.
  • 19-inch forged wheels in a cross-spoke design, painted in titanium grey with high-sheen finish or in matte black with high-sheen rim flange, with simulated central wheel lock in aluminum.
  • The AMG Night Package which augments design features such as the front splitter, side skirt inserts in high gloss black, and exhaust tailpipes in black chrome.

Bodyshell: Extensively reinforced

The developers at AMG extensively reinforced the bodyshell of the CLA 45 4MATIC+, providing a solid basis for precise self-steering characteristics, track and camber stability, and high-speed driving dynamics. A lightweight aluminum plate bolted underneath the engine – the "shearing plate" – increases torsional rigidity of the vehicle's front end. This is in addition to a strut tower brace located between the front suspension struts and pistol-shaped "shotguns" – serving as additional side member connections that minimize movements of the front section. Diagonal struts located at the front and rear of the underbody further improve rigidity. As a result, the entire suspension system responds in a precise manner even at its physical limits, giving the driver clearly defined feedback. With reduced body torsion around the longitudinal and transverse axis, the CLA 45 experiences less rolling and pitching on bends when braking and during load cycles.

Drive system: New turbocharged four-cylinder with ample power

With an output of 382 hp, the completely newly developed 2.0-litre engine is one of the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Mercedes-AMG has improved the output of the preceding engine by 7 hp. Maximum torque has also increased from 350 lb-ft  to 354 lb-ft. With an output per litre of 191 hp, the new Mercedes-AMG high-performance turbo engine ranks ahead of many well-known super-sports car engines. The new, highly efficient powerpack is produced on an innovative production line in Affalterbach, on the "One Man, One Engine" principle.

The new compact sports car sprints from zero to 100 km/h in record time:  the CLA 45 4MATIC+ reaches 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. However, with the optional AMG Track Package, the top speed is increased to 270 km/h.

Apart from its performance figures, the new engine impresses with its immediate response. The engine's torque curve was carefully balanced through "torque shaping" resulting in the maximum torque of 354 lb-ft being available within the 4750-5000 rpm range. With this configuration, the AMG engineers achieved a power delivery akin to a naturally aspirated engine. The engine developers were able to realize a dynamically increasing torque curve in the lower engine speed range, thereby improving throttle response. The increasing torque at higher rpm makes the engine more free revving. Moreover, the high maximum engine speed (up to 7200 rpm) emphasizes the engine's sporty character.

Engine design: Intelligent details

The new engine excels with numerous intelligent design features. Unlike the likewise transversely installed four-cylinder in the 35 models or the preceding model, the new engine is rotated around its vertical axis by 180 degrees. This means that the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold are now positioned at the rear, on the side of the firewall when viewed from behind. This allows for the intake system to be positioned at the front. This configuration allows the flattest possible and aerodynamically advantageous front section design. Furthermore, the new arrangement allows much improved air ducting with shorter distances and fewer diversions – on both the intake and exhaust side.

Turbocharger: Roller bearings reduce mechanical friction

The new twin scroll turbocharger of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ combines optimum responsiveness at low engine speeds with a high power in the upper rpm range. In addition to this, the turbine housing is divided into two flow passages, which run parallel to one another. Together with the similarly divided ducts in the exhaust manifold, the split turbine housing makes it possible to feed the exhaust flow to the turbine separately. This configuration prevents the individual cylinders from influencing each other negatively during load cycles, and improves the gas cycle. The result is higher torque at lower engine speeds, and extreme responsiveness.

For the first time, the shafts of the compressor and turbine have roller bearings similar to the top output variant of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine found in the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The roller bearings reduce mechanical friction within the turbocharger to a minimum. The charger therefore responds more readily and reaches its maximum speed of up to 169,000 rpm more rapidly.

Charge pressure: Electronically controlled for optimum responsiveness

With a maximum charge pressure of 30 psi, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is also the leader in its segment in this respect. The electronically controlled wastegate (exhaust relief valve) allows the charge pressure to be controlled even more precisely and flexibly while optimizing responsiveness, especially when accelerating from partial load. Numerous parameters are taken into account in this process. The main input signals for the wastegate control unit are the charge pressure, throttle flap position and the knocking tendency. The modifying signals include the intake air temperature, engine temperature, engine speed and atmospheric pressure. This also makes temporary boosting of the charge pressure (overboost) possible under acceleration.

In addition to oil and water, fresh air is used to cool the turbocharger. This is directed specifically to the charger from the radiator grille, via the engine cover designed as an air deflector and ducts beneath the hood. The concept is based on the principles and experience gained with the cooling for the internally mounted turbochargers of the current AMG 4.0-litre V8 engines, starting with the AMG GT in 2014. In addition, the turbine housing has integral insulation.

Crankcase: All-aluminum with outstanding properties

The all-aluminum crankcase is a chill-cast unit that excels with outstanding material properties. In this process, molten aluminum is poured into the metallic mould using the effect of gravity. As a result of exceptional thermal conductivity, the water-cooled mould allows rapid cooling and solidification of the melt. The result is a fine-grained, dense structure that guarantees very high strength. Complex interior geometries can be realized with the help of enclosed sand cores.

The "closed-deck construction" – a design taken from motorsport ensures maximum rigidity with low weight and allows peak combustion pressures of up to 2320 psi. The areas around the cylinders are mostly solid, and smaller ducts for the coolant and engine oil only penetrate the cover plate. The crank assembly with a lightweight, forged steel crankshaft and forged aluminum pistons with optimized piston rings combines low friction with high strength. The maximum engine speed is 7200 rpm, and peak output is developed at 6750 rpm. The sump features baffle plates so that despite the larger sump, and even under high lateral acceleration forces, there is always sufficient engine oil to lubricate all the relevant components.

Cylinder liners: Coated with NANOSLIDE

To reduce friction between the pistons and cylinders, the linings are coated using patented NANOSLIDE technology. This gives the linings a mirror-like surface for minimal friction, and is twice as hard as conventional grey cast-iron liners and therefore much more durable. Developed by Daimler AG, NANOSLIDE technology is protected by more than 90 patent families and more than 40 patents. This coating was first used in AMG's M 156 V8 engine, and has gone onto enhance other AMG engines for many years. NANOSLIDE technology can also be found in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Team's Formula 1 engine.

Exhaust valves: Larger dimensions for faster gas cycles

In the cylinder head, the repositioned and slightly angled injection nozzles and spark plug system have allowed for much larger exhaust valves than in the preceding engine. The larger exhaust cross-sections allow the gases to stream out of the combustion chambers with low losses, and reduce the overall piston venting action.

Two overhead camshafts control the 16 valves via weight-optimized roller cam followers. Camshaft adjustment on the inlet and outlet side allows for an excellent response and optimizes the gas cycle for each operating point. Another unique feature is the Variable CAMTRONIC valve control on the exhaust side, which features two cams per valve. The cams have different geometries, with exhaust valves that can be opened for short or long periods – depending on the cam setting required to suit the driving situation. The opening and closing of the exhaust valves results in even better responsiveness at low engine speeds, comfortable and fuel-efficient driving at medium rpm, and full power delivery in the upper rpm range.

Direct injection: Two stages for optimized power

Turbocharging and direct injection with a spray guided combustion process not only allow a high power yield, but also improve thermodynamic efficiency and therefore reduce both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

For the first time, the new high-performance four-cylinder engine has two-stage fuel injection. In the first stage, the particularly fast and precisely operating piezo injectors supply fuel to the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 2900 psi. This is a multiple process at times, and is controlled by the engine management system as required.

In the second stage, there is additional intake manifold injection using solenoid valves. This is needed to achieve the engine's high specific output. The electronically controlled fuel supply has an operating pressure of 97 psi.

Cooling: Sophisticated system for the engine, turbocharger and charge air

The high output of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ requires an intelligently conceived cooling system. Through unique design, the cylinder head and engine crankcase can be cooled to different temperature levels. This innovative measure allows a cold cylinder head for maximum output with efficient ignition timing, and a warm crankcase to reduce in-engine friction.

A mechanical water pump cools the cylinder head, whereas the crankcase is cooled via a second, electrically driven high-performance water pump. After a cold start, this pump remains passive until the engine has warmed up. In operation, the engine control unit regulates temperature so that the crankcase is always cooled according to need.

Moreover, the pump can be switched on or off as required when less output is needed, or at low engine speeds. Furthermore, the electric water pump ensures the fullest engine output and most optimal heat dissipation over the entire engine speed range. It also protects against thermal damage when idling in very high ambient temperatures.

In addition, the engine has an oil temperature management function, which controls the warm-up phase and flexibly regulates the engine oil temperature. This function brings the engine to its operating temperature more rapidly -- reducing friction and wear. This function also produces the environmentally friendly ancillary effect of reducing fuel consumption and emissions that result from a cold start.

An additional radiator, located in the wheel arch supplements a larger unit located in the front level of the main module. A low-temperature circuit is also used for air/water intercooling. This provides for ideal cooling of the highly compressed charge air, thereby contributing towards optimum engine performance.

Digital and smart hand assembly: "One man, one engine"

The new engine of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ is entirely assembled by hand. On the first floor of the AMG engine factory in Affalterbach, a completely newly designed production line was installed to bring the Mercedes-AMG "One Man, One Engine" principle in line with Industry 4.0 methods. Incorporated into this process were the latest findings in ergonomics, materials handling, quality assurance, sustainability and efficiency. To achieve this, Mercedes-AMG's hand assembly operation followed the vision of "smart production" -- an assembly operation concept that provides for maximum flexibility, transparency, and high efficiency. This approach safeguards and improves the quality of the engines and production processes using innovative and digital technologies.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with AMG TORQUE CONTROL

With AMG Performance 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive, the new CLA 45 4MATIC+ delivers maximum traction and dynamic handling. Through AMG TORQUE CONTROL as part of the new rear axle differential, drive power is not only variably distributed between the front and rear wheels, but selectively between the left and right rear wheel. Depending on the drive mode and situation, the drive torque is distributed separately to both rear wheels.

The CLA 45 4MATIC+ benefits from consistently optimum traction, even in adverse road conditions or during extreme cornering manoeuvres, such as those experienced on the racetrack. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ configuration allows for Drift mode (included in the optional AMG Track package), which makes "powersliding" possible for even more driving pleasure. Drift mode can be called up in the "RACE" driving mode via the shift paddles, if ESP ® is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode.

Electro-mechanical control: Fast response irrespective of engine speed

In the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+, the drive torque to the front and rear axle and between the two rear wheels is controlled electro-mechanically. Torque distribution is not only influenced by the driving speed -- lateral and longitudinal acceleration, the steering angle, the difference in rotational speed between individual wheels, the gear selected and accelerator position, are also taken into consideration.

The main advantage of an electro-mechanical control over an electro-hydraulic system is sharper driving dynamics. This is primarily due to the significantly faster response and speed-independent actuation of the discs over the entire adjustment range.

The all-wheel drive control is dependent on the selected driving mode and the AMG DYNAMICS setting. In "Basic" and "Advanced", the 4MATIC+ system is in "Comfort" mode. In "Pro" the 4MATIC+ system switches to "Sport" mode for even more agile handling and a higher threshold for the critical limits.

Before the system intervenes, 3-stage ESP® with individual control strategies in SPORT HANDLING MODE allows for greater drift angles and a sporty driving style. When entering bends, the CLA 45 4MATIC+ has an even more agile response thanks to braking intervention at the inner rear wheel depending on the selected AMG DYNAMICS mode or driving mode.

Suspension: Specific components for highly dynamic handling

The unique layout of the AMG suspension enables the CLA 45 4MATIC+ to achieve exceptional straight-line stability and highly dynamic cornering behaviour. A McPherson suspension strut construction is fitted onto the front axle. A wishbone below the wheel centre, together with a spring strut and respective tie rod, reduce the influence of the road conditions on steering. Aluminum wishbones reduce the unsprung masses and produce a more sensitive response from the springs. The AMG-specific front steering knuckle has a radially bolted brake calliper – a technology usually reserved for motorsport.

The 4-link rear suspension is rigidly connected to the body via a rear axle carrier, and therefore very torsionally rigid. Three transverse control arms, one trailing arm, and specific bearings per rear wheel ensures maximum driving stability and agility.

AMG RIDE CONTROL: Suspension with three modes

The optional AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension presents drivers with a choice of three different suspension control modes. Ranging from comfort-focused to sporty, the system operates automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions. This happens within milliseconds and is infinitely variable, with a wide spread of damping characteristics. With AMG RIDE CONTROL, ride comfort and agility are enhanced in equal measure.

Robust high-performance brake system

The high-performance braking system of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ ensures fade-resistant deceleration and short braking distances. The front axle of the vehicle is fitted with new 4-piston Monoblock fixed callipers and 350 millimetre brake discs, and the rear with 1-piston sliding callipers and 330 millimetre brake discs. The discs are internally ventilated and perforated to better dissipate heat and prevent brake fading, even with extreme use. The grey-painted brake callipers have white AMG lettering.

The optional AMG Track Package features an even larger braking system, with 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 millimetre brake discs at the front axle. With this package, the brake callipers are red and bear a black AMG logo.

Steering with special rack and variable ratio

Speed-sensitive, electro-mechanical sports power steering supports the CLA 45's sporty driving style. A special rack with a variable transmission ratio and two characteristic curves, depending on which drive program the driver has selected, provides taut, sporty, or more comfortable steering feedback. The rigid mounting in the integral carrier connects the steering with the body even more, which increases steering precision.

AMG exhaust system: With exhaust flap for sound modulation

As standard, the exhaust system has an exhaust flap that is automatically controlled depending on the engine speed and load. Depending on the drive program selected, it modulates the sound from harmoniously discreet (in the programs Slippery, Comfort and Sport) to emotively sporty (in Sport+).

Six driving modes: Vehicle characteristics with wide spread

Drivers can choose between six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs that enable a wide range of vehicle characteristics. Toggling between "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "Individual" and "RACE" (included in the optional AMG Track Package) will change the response of the engine and the timing of the transmission.  Numerous relevant parameters are modified:

  • Powertrain: Accelerator characteristics, shift times and timing, sound characteristics with the options of Reduced, Moderate, Sport or Dynamic
  • Transmission: Automatic or manual
  • AMG DYNAMICS: Agility functions such as all-wheel control, steering characteristics and additional ESP® functions with the options of Basic, Advanced or Pro
  • Exhaust system: Sound and nature of the sound functions: Balanced or Powerful
  • Chassis (with optional AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension): Available in Comfort, Sport, Sport+

The new "Slippery" drive program optimizes the CLA 45 for slippery road conditions, with reduced power and a flat torque curve. In this mode, smooth gear changes, earlier up shifts, and the ECO start/stop function support stability focused driving.

In "Comfort" mode, drivers can enjoy comfortable, fuel-efficient driving because of very early upshifts. In this mode, suspension and steering are set up with an emphasis on comfort, and the ECO start/stop function is active.

"Sport" and "Sport+" place the focus on agility and driving pleasure with a more open engine and precisely tuned transmission. In these modes, the sound of the turbocharged engine becomes much more distinctive and the ECO start/stop function becomes inactive. "Sport+" is particularly exhilarating with double-declutching during downshifts and partial cylinder cut-off via a brief delay of the ignition and injection at full load.

The "Individual" driving program enables individual parameters to be selected and saved according to personal preferences. In addition, a gliding function is available in the "Reduced" and "Moderate" drive settings.

The "RACE" mode makes for highly dynamic driving on enclosed racetracks. In this program, all of the parameters are configured for maximum performance.

AMG DYNAMICS: More agility and high stability

The CLA 45 4MATIC+ comes standard with AMG DYNAMICS, a new feature within the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. This integrated dynamic handling control system extends the stabilizing functions of ESP® with corrective interventions according to the driver's wishes. During dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the rear inside wheel creates a defined yawing moment about the vertical axis, which contributes to the CLA 45's precise steering.

The spectrum ranges from extremely stable to highly dynamic. On the multimedia display, when a drive program is selected, the new AMG DYNAMICS symbol is displayed together with the corresponding additional information.

  • "Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. In this case, the car exhibits very stable handling with a high level of yaw damping.
  • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" program. The car remains neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement, and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
  • "Pro" (short for "Professional") belongs to the "Sport+" program. In "Pro" the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres, while agility and feedback from the road when cornering are further enhanced.

In the "Individual" drive program, the driver can set the AMG DYNAMICS levels "Basic", "Advanced" and "Pro" himself.

Interior: Close symbiosis between man and machine

With its sporty appointments and the MBUX infotainment system, the high-quality interior of the CLA 45 creates a close, personal connection between man and machine. The driver and front passenger are seated in an active position on contoured sport seats with firm lateral support. The standard upholstery as a combination of black ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfibre is timeless, and creates typical AMG highlights with double topstitching in red. Available red designo seat belts echo the colour scheme. As an alternative, upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather in neva grey/black with mid-grey double topstitching and light-longitudinal-grain aluminium trim are available.

Also included in the standard equipment is the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather with 12 o'clock marking. An AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMCIA microfiber with AMG steering wheel buttons is available in the AMG Driver's Package.

The centre console in high-gloss black with a touchpad as standard has a further control array with additional switches controlling the 3-stage ESP®, the manual transmission mode, the adaptive damping system of the optional AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension and the optional AMG Performance exhaust system. In combination with the optional leather upholstery, it features a silver chrome console surround.

The characteristic, sporty AMG ambience is also enhanced by the sports pedal cluster of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, black floor mats with AMG lettering, the black fabric roof liner and AMG front entry sills in brushed stainless steel with illuminated "AMG" lettering.

The MBUX multimedia system

MBUX is included as standard on the CLA 45 4MATIC+. Within the widescreen cockpit, the instrument cluster and touchscreen multimedia display are combined into one unit. Numerous functions can be activated via intelligent voice-operated control, prompted by the phrase: "Hey Mercedes".

In the CLA 45 4MATIC+, MBUX features AMG-specific content. The instrument cluster contains specific details such as the AMG start-up menu with three selectable AMG display styles. The supersport mode is particularly striking, with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter. Via the AMG menu, there are various special displays such as Warm-up, Set-up, G-Force and Engine Data.

The touchscreen multimedia display can also present drivers with telemetry data, visualizations of various driving programs, and AMG TRACK PACE.

Individual optional equipment: Even more intensive driver involvement

Numerous options are available to suit the new CLA 45 4MATIC+ to individual customer wishes. They include the following:

  • Leather upholstery
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather / DINAMICA microfibre
  • AMG Performance Seats
  • AMG Track Package, featuring larger AMG high-performance braking system with red-painted 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 mm brake discs at the front
  • "RACE" driving mode and Drift mode

Drive better: Improve your skills with AMG TRACK PACE

With the optional AMG TRACK PACE, MBUX is enhanced with a virtual engineer that can record and analyze vehicle-specific data and times on closed routes. Many of these values can be displayed on the widescreen cockpit or on the optional head-up display in real-time. After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyze, and if necessary, improve his/her driving skills.

In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved. The driver can record any circuits and open circuits as he/she, and can save them for later vehicle data recording. Thanks to a newly developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or has been shortened. This is done using GPS data and information from the following vehicle sensors: acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, and wheel speeds.

The data is displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display. Well-known racetracks like the Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps are already stored. Furthermore, it is also possible to record one's own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and the maps can be updated online.

The MBUX Augmented Reality function also allows the ideal line of a stored racetrack to be displayed on the multimedia display or optional head-up display, allowing the driver to improve lap times with a virtual instructor.
