Model Details

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a luxury off-road vehicle that has long been considered a design icon. Its silhouette has remained mostly unchanged since its introduction in 1979. The new G-Class is setting the bar even higher in all relevant areas: in terms of on- and off-road performance, comfort, and telematics.

While the exterior maintains much of its iconic look, the interior of the G-Class has undergone a modern redesign which reinterprets the genes of the classic vehicle in order to reflect its new exterior. Numerous G-Class exterior design features have been transposed into its interior. For instance, the round shape of the headlamps is reflected in its side air vents, while the iconic design of its indicators is reflected in the shape of its top-mounted loudspeakers. The instrument cluster and dashboard have been fully modernized and consist of a standard "Widescreen Cockpit" comprising two 12.3-inch displays, which blend visually beneath a shared glass cover. Drivers can choose between three different styles for the displays – "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive" – and also select relevant information and views according to their individual needs.

The new G-Class also offers increased comfort for its occupants. More leg, shoulder, and elbow room – combined with new features such as ENERGIZING Massage, Driving Dynamic front seats, new 64-colour ambient lighting, and air ionization – add to the driver's overall comfort and wellbeing, regardless of the driving conditions. On-board storage space has been improved, too, when compared with the outgoing model: new cup holders in the front and back, storage above the light switch, a rear centre console compartment, and side pockets on all four doors make it much easier to stow items securely during trips.

The latest Safety and Driver Assistance Systems are included as standard equipment on the new G-Class. These include Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and PRE-SAFE®.

Both on-road and off-road driving have been improved. The on-road performance of the G-Class has been enhanced thanks to a new independent front axle design. On the road, the "G" is as agile as it is comfortable and provides the driver with more satisfying steering thanks to a new electromechanical rack-and-pinion system. DYNAMIC SELECT now offers drivers up to five driving modes for the G‑Class, which allows the vehicle's characteristics to be adjusted almost instantly at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension, steering, and assistance systems, depending on the driver's requirements.

The new "G-Mode" also improves the vehicle's off-road handling characteristics. As soon as one of the three differential locks has been activated, or the LOW RANGE off-road reduction gear has been engaged, the G-Class changes to "G-Mode" independently of the chosen driving mode. Activation is indicated by a small "G" icon discreetly lighting up in the instrument cluster. This off-road mode ensures optimum control and maximum off-road capability by adapting the responsiveness of the accelerator as well as the adjustable damping of the chassis and the steering, and by avoiding unnecessary gear shifts.

The new G-Class is powered by the proven M176 engine, a high-performance 4.0 litre V8 gasoline engine that produces 416hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission was specifically adapted to meet the needs of this off-road icon: the developers used a dedicated software application in order to reduce the shift and response times of the 9-speed transmission. The wide transmission ratio not only makes driving quieter and more comfortable, especially at low engine speeds, it also contributes to reduced fuel consumption.
