A comprehensive range of enhancements for the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet

The E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, the most emotionally appealing members of the luxury-class model family, have undergone a significant refresh that enhances their attractiveness and makes these two dream cars even more desirable. The styling of the vehicles has been sportily honed, and the front sections have been given a particularly fresh look. The all-LED headlights are fixed within flattened housings, and the inner workings of the LED tail lamps have been reworked for a more dynamic light signature. As part of the ‘facelift’ these two-door E-Class models take on the key upgrade features previously announced for the Sedan and Wagon. These include the electrified and efficient gasoline engine with integrated starter-alternator, the next generation of driving assistance systems, and the revolutionary Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system.

The emotive appeal of these two dream cars has been further highlighted by this model upgrade. The E-Class Cabriolet featuring a classic fabric top offers spaciousness and comfort on long journeys for up to four people. Equipped with the AIRCAP electric draught-stop system, and AIRSCARF neck-level heating, the E-class Cabriolet enables true enthusiasts to drive year round. This unrestricted usability is ensured by the Cabriolet’s acoustic soft top, a standard feature designed to help minimize the level of exterior noise that makes its way into the cabin. Its multi-layered structure with sophisticated insulation reduces wind and driving noise, and provides a comfortable environment for both driver and passengers. With its expressive ‘coupe-esque’ proportions, clear, sensual design, and comfort for up to for people, the new E-Class Coupe combines the beauty and virtues of a grand tourer with state-of-the-art technology.  

Refined styling: the diamond radiator grille with an “A-shape” design

The front end of the vehicles have undergone significant design modifications, which bring added refinement to the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. Flatter headlights featuring all-LED technology add to their dynamism. These headlights feature an inspiring torch-flame effect with two unlit pins. With the optionally available MULTIBEAM LED headlights, the latter are lit.

The new diamond radiator grille features an “A-shape” design, chrome-plated dots, a single louvre, and the centred Mercedes star.

Like the front section, the muscular rear of the vehicle has also undergone transformation: the two-piece tail lamps feature LED technology and now have completely redesigned inner workings. The star module with integrated reversing camera is inset into the lid of the trunk.

As part of the refresh, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are now available with four new paint colours: high-tech silver, graphite grey metallic, Mojave silver and Patagonia red (designo). The wheel line-up has also been expanded and now includes the aptly named ‘aero-wheels’.

As was already the case, the interiors of the Coupe and Cabriolet continue their legacy of combining contemporary style with sporty luxury. The essential lines of the interior are now more clearly defined. The upper section of the dashboard appears to hover over the generously proportioned trim elements that flow all the way into the vehicle doors. The exceptionally high-quality materials, in combination with expert craftsmanship emphasize the car’s sporty-yet-high-class appeal. New-look trim options, such as open-pore grey ash wood and aluminum with light carbon-fibre grain further enhance the interior.

The seats combine hallmark Mercedes-Benz practicality with avant-garde styling, and exceed expectations in terms of comfort, especially while travelling long distances. At the same time, these seats provide excellent support in dynamic driving situations. The adaptive driver’s seat adjustment is a particularly intelligent feature: when the height of the occupant is entered on the media display or via Mercedes me, the seat automatically moves into a position generally suitable for someone of that height.

Designed to ‘embrace,’ the seats feature prominent side bolsters and integrated head restraints. The seat contour follows the pronounced side bolsters, and depending on the specification can be made available with sporty transverse seams, or seams that flow longitudinally. Numerous material combinations, ranging from embossed leather, to sun-reflecting leather (for the Cabriolet) are now possible.

Next-generation driving assistance systems: a high-level of active safety

The new E-Class comes equipped with the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz driving assistance systems designed to provide cooperative support to drivers. This results in an especially high level of active safety: the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are able to react if the driver doesn't. The hands-off recognition feature of the steering wheel now works on a capacitive basis. This enhances user-friendliness when driving in semi-automated mode. A steering moment – that is to say a slight movement of the steering wheel – was previously required as feedback, now drivers must only place their hands on the steering wheel. The new steering wheel features a pad with the appropriate sensors in the rim. These register whether or not the driver is holding the wheel. If the system detects that the driver does not have their hands on the steering wheel for a certain time, a warning cascade is started, which finally activates Emergency Brake Assist if the driver continues to be inactive.

As standard, the E-Class comes with Active Brake Assist, which uses autonomous braking to either prevent a collision or mitigate its severity. The system brakes for stationary vehicles and crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds, and depending on the situation, can prevent collisions. As part of the Intelligent Drive Package, this feature also works when turning off across the oncoming traffic lane.

Even more comfort in the interior: a new generation of steering wheels and MBUX

As part of the model update, the E-Class is fitted with an entirely new steering wheel. It is available as a leather steering wheel in a super sports flat-bottomed design. The control surfaces sport a high-gloss black finish, while the trim elements and surrounds have a silver shadow finish. The instrument cluster and the media display are controlled by swiping along the Touch Control buttons. The operating principle of the Touch Control buttons has now changed from optical to capacitive. A mechanical system was no longer needed, and the touch surfaces also are less susceptible to fingerprints. Whether the driver has control of the steering wheel is now determined by means of capacitive detection.

The new E-Class is equipped with the latest generation of the MBUX multimedia system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). As standard, it includes two large 12.3 inch/31.2 cm screens, which are arranged side by side for a sublime widescreen look. The information in the instrument cluster and on the media display is easily legible on the large, high-resolution screens. An emotive presentation with brilliant graphics underlines the comprehensibility of the intuitive control structure.

ENERGIZING comfort control networks various comfort systems in the vehicle, and uses musical and lighting moods and a number of massage modes to meet a wide range of the requirements needed to maintain the occupant’s wellbeing.

New to the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet is the ENERGIZING COACH function. Based on an intelligent algorithm, this function recommends one of the programmes suited to the individual and situation. If a Garmin® wearable is integrated, personal values such as stress level or quality of sleep optimise the accuracy of the recommendation. The aim is for passengers to feel well and relaxed even during demanding or monotonous journeys.

E as in efficiency: electrification of the powertrain is extended

The electrification of the powertrain takes another major step forward with the model update of the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet.

The 48-volt technology with an integrated starter generator (ISG) is a feature of the in-line six-cylinder gas engine (M 256) now available for the first time in the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. As with the Sedan, Wagon, and All-Terrain models, this power unit has now been added to the engine line-up for the two-door models. This unit is capable of providing electrical boost of up to 21 hp and as much as 184 lb-ft of torque to ensure rapid acceleration and instant response. In combination with the all-wheel drive 4MATIC system, the sporty character of the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet is further enhanced. The systematic electrification of the engine is a major factor in the exceptional efficiency of the powertrain and evidence of the company's forward-looking drive system strategy.

The success story of the two-door E-Class models

The tradition of sedan models in the segment now occupied by the E-Class is a long one, and extends back to the very origins of the Mercedes (and Benz) brands. The Stroke/8 Coupe (model series 114) of 1968 marked the introduction of a second body variant. Further Coupe models in this vehicle segment followed – for a while also under the name CLK. Each generation combined elegant design with agile sportiness and contemporary luxury at a high level.

The Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) of September 1991 marked the premiere of an elegant cabriolet model: this four-seater vehicle with fabric top formed part of the 124 model series, renamed the E-Class in 1993, and was available from the spring of 1992, initially as the 300 CE-24. This cabriolet revived the long tradition of four-seat open-top vehicles in the history of Mercedes-Benz brand after a hiatus of some twenty years: production of its predecessors in this body style in the S-Class, the 280 SE Cabriolet and 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet (W 111), having ceased in 1971. In the intervening period, Mercedes-Benz had continued to maintain the culture of open-top driving with the two-door SL sports cars. The success of the A 124, of which 33,592 examples had been produced by 1997, was followed seamlessly by the CLK Cabriolets of the model series A 208 (1998 to 2003) and A 209 (2003 to 2010) as well as by the E-Class Cabriolets of the model series A 207 (2010 to 2017) and A 238 (since 2017).
